# Press Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 2nd  March 2025

The Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL) and the Tamar Sexual Assault Referral Centre (Tamar SARC) are calling for an independent investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President H.E. Godswill Akpabio. Such serious claims require a swift and thorough investigation to maintain the integrity of our National Assembly and ensure justice for all parties involved.

Sexual harassment in any form is unacceptable, especially in positions of power where such behavior can create a hostile environment for those affected. WACOL emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and respectful workplace for everyone, regardless of gender or status. Nigeria’s democratic institutions must serve as safe spaces for all, allowing women and men to lead and participate without fear of harassment or intimidation.

We strongly encourage the relevant authorities to take the following actions:

  • Conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the allegations made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
  • Ensure the investigation is conducted transparently, promoting accountability and justice.
  • Support and protect all individuals who come forward with harassment allegations, allowing them to do so without fear of retaliation.

Of course, the law will equally take its course in cases of false accusation.

WACOL stands in solidarity with survivors of sexual harassment and advocates for a culture of respect and dignity within our political institutions. We call on all stakeholders to prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals in the National Assembly and to take decisive action to address harassment in all its forms.
